When I first taught them Visualisation, no one really believed in its effectiveness. Yet during every lightning alert, i’ll go through the skill with them again, making sure that they know how to do it and do it countless times even if they didn’t want to. They didn’t have a choice. “Do it for 2 months and if it doesn’t work by the time you race your Nationals, come and look for me”, this was their only option. They did it and eventually did well because of how well prepared they were

Being a canoeist in NJC from 2016 to 2017, I had the privileged of being coached by Nanfeng and learning many skills and values from her that I continue to use and live by till date.

Before becoming an NJ canoeist, I was formerly a canoeist from Gan Eng Seng School (GESS). Having 4 years of experience prior to entering the NJC canoeing team, I was unsure of how much more I could progress as a canoeist, moreover, having returned to the sport after a prolonged study pause I entered the team being one of the weakest and was constantly demoralized. However, Nanfeng’s unique coaching style has enabled me to push beyond my perceived boundaries, motivate myself and others as well as improve my abilities in the sport.

She can relate to her students as she joins us to do her training programs, making tweaks to it to make our training more effective, moreover, she is able to accurately pin point our weaknesses and strengths (even when her students are unaware of it) as well as advise us on how to improve on them. Outside of training, she makes the effort to build a personal relationship with all her students to understand them better, this in turns allows her to modify her training programs to fit each of her students.

Being a member of NJ Canoeing, we are the living embodiment of our team’s core values; FIGHTERS — Fortitude, Integrity, Gratitude, Humility, Teamwork, Endurance, Resilience, and Selflessness —Nanfeng being an alumnus of NJ Canoeing, understood the importance and significance of these values and strives to inculcate these values to her students in every training on top of just coaching to be better in the sport. Moreover, with her wealth of experience, I was able to grasp the skill of visualization that has allowed me to improve myself in the sport when out of the waters, beyond canoeing, visualization has helped me to improve my time management during exams as well as technical handling during my national service.

Nanfeng is more than just a coach, she is a senior and a good friend. She has not only helped me to achieve more in the sport but also shaped me into the person I am today. Thanks Coach!
